Beautiful sculptures made of stones by Sharon Nowlan.
It all started with a handful of pebbles.
That’s the short version of a very long answer to a question people ask me all the time. I won’t go into all the boring details here…..you may already know the story if you’ve met me at a show and asked the question of how I got started doing all this. It’s a long story that starts way back….. further than I care to admit when I was 14.
Lots of stuff happened in between then and now The roller coaster of life sends you in all kinds of directions that you don’t imagine for yourself, but when it’s done you can’t imagine it any other way. That’s how I feel about what I do now. I never would have imagined that my musings with pebbles would turn out to be the center of my art career.
What I want people to understand is that it’s so much more than putting pebbles onto paper. It’s like putting paint to canvas or pen to paper, easy to make something…..a challenge to make something original that makes people feel an emotion.
I design with pebbles the same way that people design with fabric, metal, wood, paint or flour and butter. It’s just a different way of expressing all the wonderful things that life has to offer. It still amazes me to think that it’s possible to create such warm human emotion with the tiniest little pebble.
I feel very blessed to have art in my life. To meet the people that I meet, and hear their stories about how my art has touched their lives.
So unexpected…. yet I can’t imagine it any other way.
Like a small round pebble, tossed around in the waves for a thousand years….. only to end up on the beach at my feet. Just exactly as it should be.
