The Re-Western series offers a feminist interrogation of the western genre,
featuring portraits of female cowboys. Felice House is an American painter and her Re/Western series offers a feminist interrogation of the western genre, featuring portraits of female cowboys. Following the recent revival of popular interest in Hollywood westerns, the exhibition will be accompanied by a program of film screenings including ‘Johnny Guitar’ (1954) and ‘Westworld’ (1973).
Felice House is an accomplished figurative painter who strives, through her portraits of women,to provide a counterpoint to the passive representations found in art historical tradition. Her subjects are beautiful and observable, but they are not consumable.
