MARC QUINN WAS BORN IN LONDON IN 1964.
Marc Quinn graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in History and History of Art and subsequently worked as an assistant to the sculptor Barry Flanagan. He is one of the leading artists of his generation, with his sculptures, paintings and drawings exploring the relationship between art and science, the human body and the perception of beauty, among other things. Other key subjects include cycles of growth and evolution through topical issues such as genetics and the manipulation of DNA, as well as issues of life and death and identity. Quinn’s work uses a broad range of materials, both traditional and untraditional. The materiality of the object, in both its elemental composition and surface appearance, is at the heart of Quinn’s work.

An inflatable reinterpretation of the iconic sculpture ‘Alison Lapper Pregnant’, titled ‘Breath’ took center stage at the London 2012 Paralympic Games’ opening ceremony.
It is a portrait of disabled artist Alison Lapper when she was eight months pregnant. Of the original piece (first exhibited in Trafalgar Square in 2005 – 2007 as the inaugural Fourth Plinth commission) she has said: “I regard it as a modern tribute to femininity, disability and motherhood. It is so rare to see disability in everyday life – let alone naked, pregnant and proud.”
